Add Value Into Your Home With These Different Types Of Trims

January 10, 2023

Trims may be small, but their role as a design element is not minor. They're primarily applied on walls and are used both practically and decoratively. Let's explore the various types of trims and how each component improves the value of your home.

In the practical aspect, trims typically cover gaps between two areas where corners meet. It often has several intricate patterns that accentuate the setting and style of the room. Other than covering up unpleasant corners, trims are also used for protecting the walls from furniture scratches.

Take a look at the following trims that will surely improve the look of your living space:

Crown Molding

As the name implies, it rules over all the trims due to being the most popular millwork. Crown molding is also widely installed in residential homes. It covers the joint where the wall and ceiling meet, drawing the eye above. Crown moldings give an illusion of a higher ceiling.

Their design is also minimalistic without all the ornate details. However, some homeowners love to splurge on the plan to make the space look flourishing. Adding crown molding is worth the price, bringing out the best in every room where they're installed.

Baseboard

The baseboard is equally famous as the crown molding and also serves the same purpose of covering the joint between two surfaces. However, it could be more noticeable since it's installed below and is often covered by furniture. The design is also much plainer than the crown molding since it's not eye-catching.

Chair Rail

The chair rail serves the practical purpose of shielding the wall from furniture scratches, specifically from chairs. Bumps and damages can change the surface and even chip off the paint. That's why chair rail molding is applied on the wall, a bit higher from the floor. It's also installed mostly in dining rooms due to the high volume of chairs and their movement around the space.

Picture Rail

The picture rails work similarly to chair rails, installed at specific measurements below the ceiling. They're used for displaying art without damaging the walls since the nail is driven to the Molding. Eventually, the picture rail became more of a decorative element.

Picture Frame Molding

This is purely a decorative trim, where it's installed in a manner that resembles a picture frame on the wall. It could frame artwork to a certain extent. However, it is often best to leave the trim as a visual element. Artisans apply repetitive patterns on this trim that are replicated across the walls. It can also stand alone as the focal point of the room.

Panel Molding

Like the picture frame molding, the panel molding is a decorative element in the space. It also functions the same way, although this type of trim is applied on top of the existing panels initially installed on the wall.

Door or Window Trim

Also known as "casing," it typically surrounds the door, and window frames the wall. This trim is multipurpose since it can be both practical and decorative. It joins the window and door frame to the wall as an extra decorative element.

Corbel

L-shaped brackets are placed between vertical and horizontal planes, mostly between walls, ceilings, or countertops. At first, they were designed to be load-bearing elements, but they eventually turned out to be decorative.

Other types of trims

·        Pierced Molding is a purely decorative trim that doesn't come in a solid form and is cut through, revealing the wall behind it.

·        Architrave Molding is a small set above windows and doors, typically in an arched form.

·        Rosette is a round, floral-like decorative detail applied on walls, ceilings, columns, etc.

·        Plinths are blocks that serve as a door base and add a decorative factor to casings.

·        Corner Block comes in various decorative blocks placed in corners, creating an elegant look.

·        Wainscoting is more of a paneling than a trim or Molding; the wainscoting's known for being decorative millwork. It's usually installed on the lower part of the walls, paired with a trim frame.

·        Beadboard is another type of wainscoting where the row of vertical boards is divided by ridges or beads. The beadboard is also framed by trim.
